Quote

Justin Whitmel Earley on our ordinary routines:

“The most significant thing about any household is what is considered normal. Why is this so important? Because the normal is what shapes us the most, though we notice it the least. It is precisely the unremarkable nature of the normal that gives it such remarkable power. All of our unspoken values get hidden under the invisibility cloak of the ordinary. We think of our day-to-day routines as neutral simply because we see them so often.”

Useful Ideas

I.

Here’s a lifestyle design approach to improve your life:

Pick a game to play in life where the process itself is fun for you.

When the process becomes enjoyable, your progress becomes inevitable.

Why is this?

When the process becomes fun you’ll do it more.
When you do it more you’ll develop competence.
When you develop competence you’ll build confidence.
When you have competence and confidence, you’ll be hard to beat.

It all starts with playing a game in life that you actually want to play and then designing the game in a way that makes the work enjoyable.

II.

There is no other you. So don’t play small.

Be unapologetically you.

Don’t worry about what other people think about you because:
1. They aren’t thinking about you that much
2. Their opinion doesn’t matter

“Let people feel the weight of who you are, and let them deal with it.” - John Eldredge

III.

Way too many people “major in the minors.”

They spend too much time on things outside their control that can’t change their life and too little time on things inside their control that can change their life.

Life is too short to waste it on things that don’t matter.

Figure out what’s important to you and then build your life around those things.

Put first things first.

Exercise

I tend to underestimate the benefits of walking.

I often feel too busy to go for a walk, which is when I need one the most.

Walking provides an opportunity for you to stack it with other positive activities — you get sun, you listen to a podcast, or you catch up with a loved one. Or, you can use it as an opportunity to unplug and just walk. Imagine that.

One of my favorite parts of walking is that the energy requirement is low and yet the reward is high.

Benefits
reduces stress
strengthens bones
improves creativity
improves circulation
improves sleep quality
boosts your mood and energy
aids in digestion (go after a meal)
reduces chances of getting various diseases

To improve your mental and physical well-being, go for more walks.
