Quote
Stoic philosopher Epictetus on taking action:
"Now is the time to get serious about living your ideals. How long can you afford to put off who you really want to be? Your nobler self cannot wait any longer.
Put your principles into practice – now. Stop the excuses and the procrastination. This is your life! You aren’t a child anymore. The sooner you set yourself to your spiritual program, the happier you will be. The longer you wait, the more you’ll be vulnerable to mediocrity and feel filled with shame and regret, because you know you are capable of better.
From this instant on, vow to stop disappointing yourself. Separate yourself from the mob. Decide to be extraordinary and do what you need to do – now."
Useful Ideas
I.
Exercise is the gateway drug to self-improvement.
It is a keystone habit that can start a domino effect of other good habits.
It teaches you: delayed gratification, self-discipline, growth mindset.
It gives you: more energy, more happiness, more confidence.
And here’s the best part… not only will you be better off from it, but so will everyone else you interact with as they’ll be getting a better version of you.
II.
A very simple way to improve your self-worth: keep your word to yourself.
III.
Building anything meaningful requires intentionality — relationships, businesses, health, faith.
You won’t just drift into becoming the person you want to be.
You have to live life by design, not by default.
Exercise
You will not reach your potential in life as a low-energy person.
You just won’t. And it’s not fun having low energy.
Therefore, an easy way to improve your life is by doing more of what energizes you and less of what drains you.
You could call this exercise a Personal Energy Audit.
There are a lot of time-consuming ways to do this but here is a simple approach…
Make a list of 5 energy makers and 5 energy takers.
Example for me:
Energy Makers:
- Exercise
- Good sleep
- Healthy food
- Reading good books
- Connecting with people I care about (including God)
Energy Takers:
- Alcohol or too much caffeine
- Too much phone time
- Staying up too late
- Lack of movement
- Negative people
If the only personal development practice we followed was to do more of our top list and less of our bottom list, we would live deeply fulfilling lives.
The Most Important Skill Nobody Taught You by Zat Rana
This is the most popular article of all time on Medium.com.
“We now live in a world where we’re connected to everything except ourselves… Everything that has done so much to connect us has simultaneously isolated us. We are so busy being distracted that we are forgetting to tend to ourselves, which is consequently making us feel more and more alone.”
Powerful read.
